Why I Don't Make New Year's Resolutions

30 December 2013

A new year and resolutions seem to go together like PB&J. New year, fresh start, self improvement. . .
Why do we wait until then to make those resolutions? I understand the symbolism behind the new year, but why wait? I'm not waiting.

We make so many goals for the next year, that sometimes, people end up getting discouraged, and give up to soon. It's because we make many unrealistic goals, instead of taking baby steps to get to where we desire to be. Slow yourself down. Take steps, not leaps. One foot in front of the other. It's a lot harder to trip and fall when you take it slow.

Every second, hour, day, week, (I think you know where i'm going) is a fresh start. A new beginning. Every second that passes, becomes our history. Try not to stress about the past, because there is nothing you can do to change it, stop fearing the future, because it's not even here yet, and live for the present. It's easier said than done, I know, but I think if we can focus on this, it would make life a little easier.

Make daily or weekly goals. Small goals. Goals that will help you reach your big goal. It's like this:
(I'm using the military as an example. . .haha!) There are many different jobs in the AF that keep a base running and keep the flight line operational. These jobs run like clock work, and work towards one goal. Each job has their own goal, which fits into the "big picture". If one job fails at something, it can temporarily bring the mission to a halt. Instead of giving up, they look at the failure, look for a solution, and start again, and once again, everything is in working order.

Just like those small goals you set for yourself. If you fail to accomplish one goal, it's okay. Figure out what went wrong, fix it, and try again. Don't get discouraged. Tomorrow is new and is a fresh start. Don't be hard on yourself, and do yourself a favor, and don't make a new years resolution. Instead, make a daily resolution. Nothing says you have to wait. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.  Each day we do get, is a chance to make a difference in our own lives.

I will be celebrating the New Year, but not a new start. I can do that any time I want.

Happy New Year's to all and I hope you find fulfillment, and happiness!
